About New Zealand Masters Swimming

New Zealand Masters Swimming (NZMS) is the national organisation that supports adult swimming throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. We provide opportunities for swimmers aged 18 and over to enjoy swimming for fitness, friendship, personal achievement, recreation, and competition

Masters Swimming welcomes adults of all abilities. Some members are former competitive swimmers, while others are new to the sport or returning to the pool after many years away. Whether you want to improve your fitness, learn new skills, challenge yourself in competition, or simply enjoy swimming with others, there is a place for you in Masters Swimming.

NZ Masters Swimming supports Masters swimming across New Zealand by:

Safeguarding national swimming records, historical archives, and competition results

Providing the governance structure and policies that enable clubs and members to operate within a consistent framework.

Facilitating national committees that contribute expertise and leadership across a range of areas.

Managing the organisation's website, digital platforms, and member information systems.

Maintaining the national membership database and registration processes.

Keeping members informed through regular newsletters and national communications.

Securing sponsorship, funding, and strategic partnerships that support the long-term success of Masters swimming.

Building strong relationships with swimming organisations nationally and internationally.

Sanctioning Masters events and maintaining a coordinated nationwide calendar to support participation and competition opportunities.

Supporting Masters Swimming Across New Zealand

NZMS works closely with affiliated clubs throughout New Zealand to create welcoming and inclusive swimming opportunities. Our clubs offer coaching, organised training sessions, social activities, endurance challenges, open water swimming opportunities, and competitive events. As a result, swimmers can participate in a way that suits their goals, interests, and experience level.

Whether you enjoy swimming for fitness or competition, Masters Swimming provides a supportive environment where you can stay active, build confidence, and connect with others who share your passion for swimming.

What We Do

NZMS supports Masters Swimming at both club and national level. We:

  • Support affiliated Masters Swimming clubs throughout New Zealand
  • Sanction Masters Swimming competitions and events
  • Maintain national records and rankings
  • Coordinate the national competition calendar
  • Promote participation in international Masters Swimming activities
  • Develop policies, governance, and resources for clubs
  • Encourage lifelong participation in swimming

In addition, NZMS works to grow and strengthen the Masters Swimming community so that adults of all ages can continue enjoying the benefits of swimming.

Our Values

Everything we do is guided by the core values of Masters Swimming: participation, achievement, inclusion, and community. While records and medals are important for some swimmers, many members measure success in different ways. For example, success might mean improving fitness, completing a personal challenge, making new friends, or maintaining an active lifestyle.

Therefore, NZMS encourages swimmers to pursue their own goals while enjoying the many physical, mental, and social benefits that swimming provides.
