Joining New Zealand Masters Swimming is simple and is the first step towards becoming part of a nationwide community of adult swimmers. Whether your interest is fitness, recreation, open water swimming, personal improvement, or competition, there is a membership option to suit your goals. Our affiliated clubs welcome swimmers from a wide range of backgrounds and experience levels, creating an inclusive environment where everyone can enjoy the benefits of swimming.

Membership with New Zealand Masters Swimming connects you not only with your local club but also with the wider Masters Swimming community across the country. Members can access club activities, swimming events, development opportunities, and resources designed to support lifelong participation in the sport. No matter your age or ability, Masters Swimming encourages continuous improvement, personal achievement, and enjoyment in the water.

Choosing the Right Membership

New Zealand Masters Swimming offers both Community and Competitive Membership options. Community Membership is ideal for swimmers who want to enjoy regular club activities, fitness, and social connections without participating in sanctioned competitions. Competitive Membership is designed for those who wish to compete in Masters Swimming events and have their performances officially recognised.

If you’re unsure which membership is right for you, your local club can help you understand the options and choose the membership that best meets your needs. Many swimmers begin with one membership type and adjust their participation as their interests and goals evolve.

Join a Club and Get Started

The first step in joining New Zealand Masters Swimming is to connect with an affiliated club. Clubs can provide information about training sessions, membership fees, coaching opportunities, and the activities available in your area. Once you’ve selected a club and completed your membership registration, you’ll be ready to enjoy all that Masters Swimming has to offer.

Whether your goal is to improve your fitness, challenge yourself in competition, meet new friends, or simply spend more time in the water, New Zealand Masters Swimming provides a welcoming pathway to lifelong participation in swimming.

NZMS membership is divided into Regions for administrative purposes:

  • Northern – Northland, Auckland
  • Districts – Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne
  • Central – Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, Manawatu
  • Capital – Horowhenua, Wellington, Kapiti
  • Southern – All South Island
